What is Reiki Energy?

By Madeline Martins, RHN

The term “reiki” means universal energy (rei = universal, ki = vital energy). Universal energy is infinite and without limits. The energy is completely beneficial and capable of healing any disharmony in the universe. Reiki is an intelligent energy that understands all the needs of the universe and has the power to resolve all needs.

An individual may seek out a reiki practitioner or reiki master for a physical, emotional or spiritual reason. During a reiki session, the practitioner will sit down with the client to discuss the reason for his or her visit and what he or she hopes to gain from the session. It is important to understand that the reiki practitioner does not control the reiki energy; instead, the practitioner channels this universal energy. I’ve heard reiki energy referred to as the universal love energy.

When a reiki session begins, the client is typically asked to lie down fully clothed, and the reiki practitioner places his or her hands slightly above or gently on the client. Most sessions last from 45 to 90 minutes.

While the experience of receiving reiki energy is different for everyone, it often brings about a feeling of calmness and joy. Many people even fall asleep during a reiki session. Some people have reported feelings of warmth or cold on the area the practitioner is working on. Others have reported the sensation of floating during a reiki session.

Common reasons for seeking reiki include wanting help with managing stress, promoting restful sleep, resolving relationship difficulties, determining one’s life path, and addressing health concerns, fear and grief. Reiki can be complementary to the health plan that your physician or other health care provider has prescribed. Reiki should not be used to replace your health care provider’s advice.

My experiences with reiki

While attending the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, one of my nutrition teachers was also a reiki master. After hearing about her experiences with reiki energy, I decided to sign up for a couple of reiki sessions with a local practitioner to see what this reiki was all about.

At my first reiki session, an overwhelming sense of sadness came over me. The reiki energy gave me clarity that I had been burning the candle at both ends, so to speak, and had lost my focus on what really mattered in my life, such as time with my friends and family as well as personal time to relax and reflect.

During my second reiki session, a peaceful sensation came over me along with a feeling of lightness, almost as if I was barely touching the table I was lying on. Other sessions have brought feelings of joy and clarity of thought about future decisions in my life. Reiki has affected my life so much that last month I began taking reiki classes so that one day I can become a reiki practitioner and help others experience reiki energy.
